Transport in Rome

From Ciampino to Rome

  • 1. Atral Bus
  • 2. Terravision
  • 3. By train
  • 4. By taxi
  • Comparison of options

Ciampino Airport (CIA code), also known as Giovanni Battista Pastine Airport , is the smaller and older of Rome’s two airports. It is located 15 km from the city , in the municipality of Ciampino, which has a population of 38,000. It is the main airport for low-cost carriers , such as Ryanair, which have significantly increased its traffic in recent years. The airport’s official website is www.adr.it/ciampino .

Ciampino Airport’s small size makes it convenient and easy to navigate. Furthermore, getting from the airport to the city and vice versa is quite simple and inexpensive. Below, we explain the different options. You’ll find a summary table at the bottom of the page.

ATRAL Bus

AIRPORT – SUBWAY LINK

There are ATRAL buses ( Azienda Trasporti Autolinee Laziali , the Lazio public transport company) that run from Ciampino to the “Anagnina” metro station , the last on line A, located next to the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA).

  • Price: The ticket costs €1.20 and can be purchased directly from the driver. If you have a large suitcase, they usually charge an additional fare.
  • Bus frequency: approximately every 45 minutes. You can see the exact timetable on the Atral website: www.atral-lazio.com
  • Journey time: about 20 minutes (except in traffic jams).

One advantage of taking the Metro in Anagnina is that you’ll find it almost empty, and you’ll be able to travel seated.

Stop location

At the airport: you’ll easily find the corresponding sign. The concourse outside the terminal is very small.

In Anagnina: When traveling from Rome to Ciampino, you’ll exit the metro into a courtyard with a gallery to the left and another to the right. Take the one on the left and go up the first set of stairs you’ll find on your right. They will lead you to the same bus bay as the Ciampino bus.

OUR ADVICE:   This is the cheapest option, and quite convenient and easy. The biggest drawback is the infrequent buses. Sometimes you have to wait for more than an hour. If you’re going from Rome to the airport, you should allow plenty of time, or choose another mode of transport to ensure a smooth journey.

Terravision Bus

AIRPORT – TERMINAL LINK

Since lowering their prices, Terravision has become one of the best options for getting to Rome. Bus departures are coordinated with flight arrivals. You simply have to wait for the bus to fill up with the last passengers from your flight. If your flight is delayed, your ticket is valid for the next available departure.

  • Ciampino-Rome price: €6
  • Round trip price: €11 (works out to €5.50 each way)
  • Buses go directly to Termini station , in the city center, the best-connected place in Rome.
  • The journey takes about 40 minutes

If your flight is delayed, your ticket is valid for the next available flight. You can also change the date of your ticket free of charge if your plans change.

Children: 0-4 years old travel free.

How do I buy a ticket? You can buy them on board the bus, but they’re more expensive. The most practical option is to buy them online, which also guarantees a reserved seat. Click on this image if you want to book :

Where is the bus stop?

At the airport: it’s on the left as you exit the terminal. You’ll easily recognize it by the Terravisión bus, which will be waiting there.

In Termini it is at Via Giolitti 38, on one side of the station (see image).

SIT Shuttle Bus

AIRPORT – TERMINAL LINK

More information is available on the official website www.sitbusshuttle.it

OUR TIP:   A direct bus to Termini is a comfortable and quick option. If you have luggage, you won’t pay any extra.

Train from Ciampino city

BUS TO CIAMPINO-CITY + TRAIN

Unlike Fiumicino, no train goes directly to Ciampino Airport, but a bus connects the airport to Ciampino city’s train station.

COMBINED TICKET . You can buy the bus ticket (€1.20) and the train ticket (€1.50) separately, but there is a combined ticket, called CIAMPINO AIRLINK, which costs the same: €2.70 .

Combined tickets can be purchased online (if your flight is delayed, you can change the ticket time), on the Trenitalia App, at authorized sales points (tobacconists…) and at automatic machines in stations.

To purchase it online, go to the Trenitalia website and select “Ciampino aeroporto” as your origin and the Rome station where you wish to get off as your destination.

1. BUS (separate ticket) . Atral buses depart every 20-30 minutes for Ciampino City. The journey takes 10 minutes and costs €1.20 (plus a supplement if you have a large suitcase). You can see the timetables on the Atral website .

2. TRAIN (separate ticket) . Once at the station, you will need to take the train to Termini ( €1.50 ). Trains run every 10-20 minutes and the journey takes 15 minutes.

OUR ADVICE:   This option is the most complicated for inexperienced users, but it’s quite fast. The journey from Rome to the airport can be calculated with precision, as both trains and buses depart on fixed schedules. It’s only recommended for frequent travelers.

Taxi from Ciampino to Rome

Official taxis

FIXED RATE OF €31

The fare from Ciampino Airport to any point in Rome is €31 , the same as the return trip from Rome to Ciampino. This is valid for a maximum of 4 people with luggage equivalent to two large suitcases, and destinations are located within the Aurelian Walls (see map ).

It’s a fixed rate, with no nighttime surcharges .

This fare is clearly advertised at the airport with signs, but before getting in, it’s a good idea to check that the taxi driver agrees with it, to avoid any surprises.

For destinations outside the city walls, it’s best to negotiate a fixed fare with the taxi driver that includes luggage. Otherwise, you’ll be charged the metered fare plus an extra charge for your luggage.

Illegal taxis. Be wary of anyone offering you a ride at the airport. They are always illegal taxis (official taxis are prohibited from operating them) and will charge you more. Taxis in Rome are always white, with the word TAXI on the roof and the license number clearly visible on the sides, next to the city’s coat of arms.

You can find more information in our post about taxis in Rome and on the official website of the City of Rome .

There are many companies that offer private transfers between the airport and the city. We chose the one offered by Welcome.

The driver will meet you at the arrivals gate and take you to the hotel at your leisure, offering helpful tips along the way.

Reservations can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the transfer.

This chart will allow you to analyze at a glance the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Travel times are calculated for the airport-Termini route. The calculation includes the average waiting time. For the return trip to the airport, you should allow significantly more time.
